3 Questions to Ask in the Search for a Foster Care Agency
If you’re planning to add to your family either through foster care or adoption, you will most likely go through a private agency. You will quickly discover in a search that there are numerous organizations dedicated to foster care and adoption. The question for you will be which one is right for your situation. To make the right decision, you should ask three questions.
- What Training Does the Agency Provide?
With foster care, you will be required to receive a certain amount of training to become licensed foster parents. The amount will depend on the state where you live, but the agency you work with should provide the necessary training for licensing as well as ongoing training to maintain your license.
You will need extra training if you plan to adopt from foster care. Adoptive parents often need training to help them learn how to integrate their child into their family while foster parents may need classes to help them handle certain behaviors. Any agency you choose to work through should support parents with educational classes, seminars and courses.
The Bair Foundation offers exceptional training through our professional staff, has created our own treatment model to address the critical needs of those we serve, and is now using the Bair-Trax web-based database for both children and foster parents.
- What Resources Does the Agency Offer Providers?
Whether you’re a foster parent or adoptive parent, you may experience some things you aren’t prepared for. You should have somewhere you can go for answers or assistance. The agency you select should have resources to help you with the challenges you’re sure to face.
Some resources these agencies may offer include respite care, clothing and other supplies for children who come into care, and therapy or counseling for the family and/or child. If you need a crib or car seat, you should be able to ask your agency if there is a resource to help you. Agencies often offer support groups and special events so you and your children can mingle with other parents in similar situations.
The Bair Foundation offers foster parent support groups to address foster care related issues, 24 hour on call service, and ongoing parent groups for training and exceptional support.
- What Kind of Support will I Receive?
Being a foster or adoptive parent can be difficult even though it’s rewarding. Having a supportive agency like The Bair Foundation behind you will make the challenging aspects easier to bear. A Christian foster care agency will pray with you to reinforce your faith when times are rough. You should have someone you can call when you don’t know what to do or you need help.
You should be able to ask questions and never be made to feel like a bother. If you have concerns, they should be taken seriously. You want to find an agency that provides all of these features. The right foster care and adoption agency can make your path much more successful.
